Watch a Plasma TV…for Your Health

Did your mother tell you that watching too much TV would strain your eyes? Turns out she was right.

According to a Japanese researcher, plasma TVs not only create better-looking pictures than LCD sets. They’re also better for your health.

That eye-rubbing claim was made yesterday at a meeting convened by the Advanced PDP Development Center, an industry group committed to improving plasma TVs picture quality.

The professor said that his research showed that watching L.C.D. TVs, which are brighter than plasma sets, actually causes more rapid eye movements, and hence increased eye strain. On the other hand, when bright scenes are displayed on plasma sets, the overall brightness level is decreased, reducing the risk of eye strain.

This was the first time that James Palumbo, head of the Plasma Display Group, a plasma TV advocacy group, had heard of the research. But he said that he would “definitely” look into how they could make this information part of a pro-plasma marketing campaign.
